Phillipe Regnauld
Technical Director, catpipe Systems ApS
Hey, where's /var/spool/mail ?
If you've asked yourself this question, come by and listen.
We'll cover the different problems that one encounters when
moving from Linux to *BSD (specifically FreeBSD), including
the following topics:
- partition considerations
=> slices/partitions in BSD vs. partitions in Linux
-
filesystem layout
=> /var, /usr, /usr/local, ...
-
startup scripts: rc.d vs. rc
-
base system, ports and packages
-
passwords and users
=> security, shadow passwords, classes
-
network configuration differences
-
kernel compilation, system upgrades
During the talk we will try to answer as many questions as
possible that can help system administrators who have to
deal with both systems.
About Phillipe Regnauld: I have been using FreeBSD since 1994 when I was handed
a QIC tape of 1.0e. It ran much faster on my 486-DX2/50
than the SunOS 4.1.1 3/60 I had at the time. Since then
I've been tinkering with UNIX and networks without ever
succeeding in writing a single line of code. I recently
co-founded a small *BSD and network company, catpipe
Systems ApS, where my qualifications has hardcore
generalist landed me the position of technical
scapegoat.
